What is Expert Wildlife?

A bespoke ecological consultancy for wildlife MANAGEMENT, monitoring, and conservation

Understanding wildlife is more than meets the eye, and relies on foundational wildlife management and conservation sciences. But this expertise is severely lacking in Ireland, which underwrites both environmental and land management issues.

This is where Expert Wildlife comes in – a consultancy ready to assist with today’s pressing wildlife issues using the most modern and applied approaches.

Dr. Adam F. Smith

Wildlife ecologist and FOUNDER

Adam has over 10 years combined experience in the academic and practical conservation sectors. A wildlife ecologist by trade, he has a BSc in Zoology and an MSc in Wildlife Ecology and Behaviour from University College Dublin. He then spent 5 years in mainland Europe, working with large mammals in landscape-scale conservation projects in some of Europe’s wildest places with an international conservation organisation. In the meantime, Adam completed a PhD in Nature Conservation with the University of Freiburg.

Adam is currently part of the Laboratory of Wildlife Ecology and Behaviour in University College Dublin.

In 2025, Adam founded Expert Wildlife as a way to bring his expertise home to Ireland.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I need deer management help, can you assist?

This our core expertise. Deer are protected wild mammals and undertaking deer management without the appropriate knowledge and licensing may be illegal. However, we can provide impact assessments, licensing applications, hunting management plans, link landowners to hunters, and do damage mitigation.

  • What fees do you charge?

Because of the dynamic needs that every client or partner has, we do not have standardised fees. We guarantee a bespoke arrangement for everyone, that balances value, transparency, and results.

  • Can you do something for small community groups or NGOs for free?

We have done this before in certain situations, but the timing and context are important. Please contact us for a discussion that allows us to find an arrangement that works for everyone.

  • I have a simple question or media enquiry, is it okay to ask?

Always! We are happy to talk to anyone, from the public to the highest government officials, and all media outlets. It is part of our responsibility as wildlife managers and scientists to communicate openly about wildlife management and conservation.

  • Can’t I just buy equipment, such as camera traps, and do my own surveys?

The conclusions drawn by a wildlife ecologist with technical expertise and experience to conduct appropriate surveys will be different than the conclusions reached by a DIY attempt. Wildlife management is extremely complex, and the right expertise saves time and money and effort in the long term.

  • Can you do drone flights for other things, such as filming or property photography?

Yes! These and more are possible. Please get in touch with the specific details and we will get back to you with a quotation.

  • We are planning to run a conservation project, at which stage should we get advice?

As early as possible. Commonly, projects run into roadblocks after some time because they have not considered appropriate strategic planning and matched appropriate indicators to outcomes. We can help plan data collection to help track your impact and underline that your efforts in conservation mean real change.
